The History of Our Chapter

The Beta Eta Chapter of Sigma Nu was established on March 2, 1892.

The History of Our Organization

Sigma Nu fraternity was founded on January 1, 1869 at the Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, Virginia. The fraternity was founded by three military cadets: James Frank Hopkins, Greenfield Quarles, and James Mcllvaine Tiley. The system of abuse and hazing in the military is what led these three young men to form the “Legion of Honor” which soon became known as Sigma Nu Fraternity. This became North America’s first “Honor” fraternity.

Our Symbols

The fraternity colors of Sigma Nu are black, white, and gold and their flower is the White Rose. The Sigma Nu flag features the three fraternity colors as well as a golden snake. The fraternal slogan is “Love, Honor, Truth.”

Sigma Nu Fraternity awards those with the highest academic achievement with automatic scholarships. These awards do not require application. Sigma Nu also offers individual and chapter awards for various topics such as man of the year, scholar of the year, and athlete of the year.
